Early‑80s Gretsch Drop‑G badge 14x22 bass drum in natural maple, ex‑Gretsch Family Foundation archive (Ridgeland, SC facility auction, 2021). This is a USA‑builtJasper‑era shell with the rarer Drop‑g badge, originally part of Gretsch’s internal overstock rather than a retail‑sold kit.
Structurally, the shell is solid, in‑round, with no warping, ply separation, or hardware tear‑out. Edges are clean and it tunes up easily with a big, focused low end. The interior shows no signs of water damage or structural issues. On the exterior there is a visible cosmetic fade/ambering arc across roughly 270° of the shell, with one “back” panel remaining notably lighter. Based on the pattern (one side consistently lighter, no banding or tide lines, and no interior staining), this presents as long‑term UV exposure/sun fade rather than standing‑water damage or a ply failure. From audience distance on stage it reads as normal vintage patina; the close‑ups in the listing are intentionally unforgiving so there are no surprises.
Hardware is where this one gets fun:
• Original Gretsch bass lugs from the factory auction
• New Gibraltar wood hoops (natural)
• Gold tension rods sourced from Fred Gretsch Jr.’s overstock collection
• New Gretsch bass drum claws
• Evans EMAD2 batter and Gretsch‑logo Remo resonant head (both essentially new)
• Bass spur mounts drilled for period‑correct pre‑Techware 80s hardware; a matching set of those spurs is available from a trusted source and can be included/installed by arrangement at cost
This drum is being offered complete and ready to play at $575 + actual shipping. The same drum will be listed at $625 on eBay and $645 on Reverb to cover platform commissions, so buying direct through this shop (or by messaging me first) will always be the better deal.
If you’re interested in pairing this with the matching‑era Gretsch square‑badge 4158 5x14 snare (10‑lug), I’m doing a $1200 package price for the bass + snare through Infusionry only. DM me before purchasing so I can update inventory and get you the correct direct‑sale link and shipping quote. I have plenty of references among vintage instrument buyers and am happy to share those on request.
Lightly played, freshly headed, and ready to go to work—this is a cool piece of Gretsch history that still earns its keep as a real‑world gigging bass drum.
